Equipment

The following equipment was used for the Sea Trial Test:

SAILOR 6310, MF/HF Radio:

  • SAILOR 6365 TU MF/HF (406365B)
  • SAILOR 6301 MF/HF Control Unit (406301A-00500)
  • SAILOR 6201 Handset (406201A-00500)
  • SAILOR 6384 ATU (406384B)
  • SAILOR 6007 Message terminal (406007A)

Antennas for receiver reception (Rx):

  • Prototype of the new compact KUM121 from AC Antennas.
  • Benchmark antenna: KUM600-2 (405302A) 6 meter passive traditional whip antenna from AC Antennas.

Antenna for transmission (Tx):

  • KUM803 (405301A) 8 meter passive traditional whip antenna with app. 2 meter feeder wire from AC Antennas.

Results

The following observations were made during the Sea Trial Test:

DSC and Telex communication:

  • At distance below 150 – 200 Nautical miles and using frequencies in the CT range and lower SW bands no problems were detected in the communication.
  • At distance above 200 up till 1500 Nautical miles the communication was limited and dependent on choice of frequency and time of the day. This is quite normal.

SSB telephony communication:

  • The crew on board Nuka Arctica have reported no problems in communication with the Greenland coast stations at distance below 200 nautical miles, and both the crew and the Greenland coast stations expressed high satisfaction with the communication quality.

Specific observations made regarding the receiving capability of the active antenna KUM121:

  • Under the given conditions regarding the antenna installation etc. no significant differences in general have been detected between the passive and the active antenna.
